Hi, my name is Ruslana and I'm studying Diagnostic Imaging at Ahuntsic College. This is a three-years program and after we take our diplomas we can work like technicians in Diagnostic Imaging. But what is Diagnostic Imaging?  Well,  X-ray Imaging creates pictures of the inside of your body. The images show the parts of your body in different shades of black and white. This is because different tissues absorb different amounts of radiation. Calcium in bones absorbs X-rays the most, so bones look white. Fat and other soft tissues absorb less, and look gray. Air absorbs the least, so lungs look black. Now, I'll give you three good reasons why to become an Imaging Technician.

1. We help people

The Diagnostic Imaging technician is an important part of the process to find out the diseases or the problems of a patient. Thanks to radiographies, the radiologist is able to make a diagnostic. Without a diagnostic, the patient would not heal properly. Our job is to prepare the exam room, to positionate, take care and reassure the patient during the exam. Our radiographies contribute in the well-being of each patient.

2. We manipulate different technologies/ we have a lot of opportunities

It is possible to specialize in several different branches, such as magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography, angiography or computed tomography scan. For most of those specialties, you would need to do an AEC of approximately 1 year at Ahuntsic College. With this second diploma, you will be able to do all the exams in this field and, also, your wage will increase. So, we learn how to handle various Medical Imaging equipment. After a few years of work, the Imaging technologist may also hold a position of responsibility for the medical imaging, system manager of medical imaging archives or become technical coordinator who ensures the quality of work in the department.

3. Good salary

Having a DEC in Diagnostic Imaging assure you a good salary. You can work in hospital or clinical. Working conditions are very good.  The Diagnostic Imaging technician typically works a standard 40 hour week, but some positions require on-call night and weekend work. The placement rate is close to 72% for the full-time! http://www.metiers-quebec.org/sante/tech_radiodiagnostic.htm

Conclusion

So, if you love biology, medicine and if you are sociable and empathetic with patients ... this area is without doubt for you !!!!! You can choosse from different specialties such as scanning, magnetic resonance, the operating room, ultrasonography, mammography. For sure this is a career of the future.
